Matthew Wolf-Meyer, PhD

We welcomed Matthew Wolf-Meyer to the program today. He is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He joined us to discuss his recently released book about the history of sleep in our culture titled The Slumbering Masses: Sleep, Medicine, and Modern American LifeHe and Dr. Don primarily focused on how sleep has changed since the industrial revolution and the complications and problems that have followed them. They discussed sleep disorders such as insomnia and the rise of sleep deprivation, differences in people’s natural sleeping patterns, why people have varied sleep needs, sleep medicine, and why medication is often not the right answer for people’s sleep issues.
